Zvona zvone, svijet pjeva.
Lastavice zimi?

Ipak, sto godina kasnije melodija i dalje traje, donoseći radost i nadu u najbolje. Pridružite se!
A Ukrainian note in the harmony of Christmas
With the first days of winter, festive markets and ice rinks, there comes our favourite music to put everyone in the right mood for Christmas. Bells are ringing, the world is singing. Do you know that one of the most popular Christmas songs — “Carol of the Bells” — is a Ukrainian song?
“Schedryk”, a folk song arranged by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych, was first performed in Kyiv in 1916. In 1922, it was performed and recorded in Carnegie Hall by the Ukrainian National Chorus, directed by Oleksandr Koshetz. Later on, “Schedryk” was adapted as a Christmas carol by Peter J. Wilhousky. He also patented the lyrics in English, which has nothing in common with the text in Ukrainian.
Originally, this traditional folk chant tells us about a swallow that flies in to proclaim a prosperous and happy new year for the family. Swallows in winter? Do not be surprised. Before Christianity, people in Ukraine celebrated the New Year in April, thus, the symbols and the words of birds and future harvest. Eventually, this song became an essential part of the tradition we call “schedruvannia”, i.e. the tradition to come to a house on New Year’s Eve with a song to wish the host and the family all the best.
The song was performed in Europe and in the USA at the beginning of the XXth century in an attempt to present Ukraine abroad. It was a difficult time for Ukrainian people who tried to create the Ukrainian People’s Republic in 1917, which, regretfully, was short-lived. Its independence was lost to the Bolsheviks in 1921. The author of “Schedryk”, Mykola Leontovych, was killed in his own home by an agent of Cheka, the Soviet secret police.
In 2024, the Russian Army, as a “true” follower of the worst Soviet practices, is destroying Pokrovsk, the city where Leontovych worked for several years as a music teacher.
Nevertheless, one hundred years later the melody is still on, bringing joy and hope for the best. Join in!
